Formed under the Alaska Native Settlement (ANCSA) Act of 1971, Port Graham Corporation (PGC) was established to represent Alaska Natives living in the Village of Port Graham who became shareholders of the newly formed Alaska Native Corporation (ANC).
PGC is headquartered in the coastal village of Port Graham (Alutiiq: Paluwik), located at the southern tip of the Kenai Peninsula near the entrance to Kachemak Bay. The community is road-inaccessible, with access available only by boat or small aircraft This maritime isolation has preserved strong
cultural ties to the sea and land while shaping the rhythm of modern life.
Under ANCSA, PGC selected roughly 100,000 acres of wilderness land from the United States government, including 60,000 acres adjacent to the village, stretching from the shores of Cook Inlet, across the Kenai Peninsula to the outer coast of the Pacific Ocean. Another 42,000 acres were
selected to reclaim birthright and ancestral homelands in what is now within the spectacular Kenai Fjords National Park.
Heritage
The Sugpiaq (Alutiiq) people of Port Graham were the ancestral inhabitants of the Kenai Fjords. Prior to the arrival of the Russians during the late 1700’s, thousands lived and prospered along this rocky coast. A sophisticated culture of maritime hunters and gatherers thrived in Nuka Bay, Yalik Bay and
Aialik Bay.
Encompassing an area today of Kodiak Island, the Alaska Peninsula, Cook Inlet, and Prince William Sound the Sugpiaq, or more commonly, the Alutiiq, maintain millennia-old spiritual ties to the land, bonds of kinship and belief, respect for Elders and community, and the shared practices and
meanings of subsistence living. In hunting, fishing, and gathering, the Alutiiq practice a deep spiritual connection with the natural world. The story of this connection is found in traditional art and objects – from kayaks to weapons, clothing, and hunting hats.
When Russians settled Alaska in the 19 th century, they coerced the Alutiiq inhabitants to hunt sea otter for the burgeoning fur trade. Eventually, all the people were relocated to Alexandrovsk (now Nanwalek) or Paluwik (now Port Graham) by the Russian missionaries during the late 1800’s. Port
Graham is known as a strongholdsof Sugpiaq/Alutiiq heritage, where traditions of language, art, and seafaring are carried forward. The people of Port Graham still revere their link to their ancestral homelands by frequently visiting for subsistence purposes and seek to maintain their ties to the land and water of
Kenai Fjords forever.
